New to opera or ballet

WHAT IS AN ELLEN KENT PERFORMANCE REALLY LIKE?

What's so special about opera?

The aim of opera is to portray the complex, dramatic plots and scores of opera with conductors, directors, designers, soloists and chorus, musicians and back-stage crew all working together to produce an evening of drama in music which is traditional for opera lovers but simplistic enough for everybody to enjoy. Ellen Kent opera productions are very spectacular with colourful sets and lavish costumes and special lighting and stage effects, dance sequences, great drama and beautiful singing. For years now we have included animals into the opera productions - eagles, Russian Borzoi dogs, Coi Carp fish, and horses.

What's so special about ballet?

Ballets use the interpretation of dance to lead you through the story. With expert skill and magnificent sets and costumes the tale enfolds alongside the music of the orchestra. Famed for our beautiful lighting, exquisite sets and young talented dancers, Ellen Kent has been a pioneer for touring ballet to more regions of the UK than any other company as well as negotiating the rights to tour Yuri Grigorovich's Nutcracker in 2000 and sets a very high standard of ballet which Ellen strives to uphold and develop.

If I am new to opera or ballet, how will I understand what's going on?

On our website you will find information and synopsis of productions. When you are at the venue, you can buy a glossy and comprehensive programme full of interesting articles and beautiful photographs.

With the opera you can also follow the action on stage with our surtitles. The operas are sung in different languages depending upon the production but the translation of the story is displayed on a screen above the stage. Please check with the Box Office when booking your seats as surtitles are not visible from some areas of the auditorium.

What do I wear to an opera or ballet?

There is not a set dress style for going to opera or ballet. Everyone can enjoy our productions, some people like to dress up and make their night out a special occasion but it is best to wear whatever you are most comfortable in.

When do I need to arrive for the opera or ballet?

It is advisable to arrive 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the performance so that you have plenty of time to find your seat, get your programme and order you interval drinks. Late arrival to an opera or ballet can result in you missing part or at times the entire first act of the production.
